By Victoria Ugarte Traipsing through the quaint streets of Berry one warm Monday afternoon in November, I stumbled on a gorgeous store with the mysterious name of Roots and Wings. Fascinated by the name, the ornate verdigris logo out the front and the lush ivy scaling its walls, I had to go in and have a look. The impact on entering this beautiful store was enough for me to abandon Peter without a word and lose myself to retail therapy and heavenly merchandise. Roots & Wings was established in Berry, on the beautiful South Coast of New South Wales on the 5th December, 2007. Berry is a very picturesque and stylish village that is just 2 hours drive South of Sydney. It is a popular weekend escape “destination”. Berry is home to some great shops, cafes and restaurants and has accommodation to suit all budgets, as well as being close to all other tourist destinations of the Shoalhaven, such as Kangaroo Valley and Jervis Bay.
“I opened the store after I had moved home after a month of overseas travel in late November ’07. I have always supported myself by working in retail during and after my studies. Retail became my real love, so when my favourite building in Berry, the original blacksmiths building, became available I decided to make my move.” Rebecca says. The name Roots & Wings was conceived as a reflection of Rebecca’s own experiences, her studies and travel. Having spread her “wings”, Rebecca has now returned to her “roots” to share the concepts and products that she loves with a place that she loves. “The move back to the country has not been without its challenges” Rebecca adds. “There are a lot less young people around, although I have noticed a greater number of people of my age group that are also starting to move back with new partners, or to start their families.” she says.

But back to Roots & Wings
Rebecca begged and borrowed every cent she could muster to spend on her store concept, fit out and quality stock in order to create a style that was simple and stylish so that it was the product, and not the space itself, that was emphasized. “It was important that the store embody the relaxed feel of a coast/country holiday. Customers often tell me that they love to just hang out at the store. Even the men admit to how comfortable they feel there.” Rebecca adds with delight. In fact, Rebecca stocks a small but select range of mens items as well as a comfortable Jardan “Coast” Lounge for them to sit back and relax on whilst their partners cruise around the shop.
