Written by Kandy Russo

I’m off to London and Paris to see the “Little Black Dress Shop”! Get an insight into how I manage my own packing.

Armed with my itinerary and a cup of tea, my thoughts go to “What Will I Wear?” on my 2 week London and Paris trip. I’ve checked the weather conditions and temperatures with my mates via email, whom I can’t wait to see in the UK! “Definitely boots and Jacket weather here. Bring your ‘mack’, as it isn’t an Indian Summer this year!” they swiftly replied.

I assemble my portable rack, check my notes of wardrobe travel staples that I have been penning for the last week or so, and dive into my wardrobe to collect my “key traveling pieces”.

The act of packing a suitcase for travel seems to be physically and psychologically daunting for most, so we just tend to postpone it and leave it till the last minute. So if packing ones “Porte” gives you the horrors, simply “chunk it down” into parts:

  • Pack cosmetics and wash bag right after you finish your morning routine, throwing your travel size products into travel sized containers and zip/snap lock bags. Little effort, and this ensures that you don’t forget anything.

  • Next, pack “smalls” – sleepwear, tights, underwear, socks.

  • Pack “tops” – singlets, knitted T.shirts.

  • Pack “bottoms” – skirts, jeans,trousers

  • Pack “toppers” – jackets, jumpers

  • Pack “evening pieces” – dresses and evening tops.

  • Pack “accessories” – scarves, belts, evening bag

NB – separate all in their own zip-lock travel bags.

photo1My Packing Plan:

T- shirts and Tops x 4, Blk, White & Cream

Singlets x 3 Blk & White

Jeans x 2, wearing Black packed Denim

Skirts x 2 stretch, above the knee & sheer flounce

Dresses x 2 Black sheer can be an overpiece, & Blk and white soft knit jersey wrap

Knitwear x 2 Cashmere hoodie & sparkle cardigan

Scarf/wrap x 2 “Etro” velvet with colour detail, Camel/Cream Pashmina to carry on flight (a “must” for your carry-on)

Shoes/ Boots x3 “Robert Clergerie” boots, my answer to shoes that look great! Patent flats and black suede boots.

Underwear Minimal, 1 x sleepwear, 2 x opaque hose and 2 x pair socks.

Retrieve the pieces that you think you really need, look at them, try them on, and make sure that they work with your shoes. Be ruthless, because you really don’t need as much as you think you do. Save your precious space for your “must have” purchases.

Kandy’s Packing Rules:

  1. Take 3 pairs of shoes MAX! Think of how you can satisfy your shoe appetite whilst you’re away!

  2. Pack 3 colours only. That way, all pieces can work together.

  3. Pack only easy-care fabrics. Knits are best.

  4. Pack the best. Chuck the rest.

  5. Try on your complete travel wardrobe. Each piece must earn their precious space!

  6. Be economical, especially with your skin care and cosmetics. If you are staying in one place, buy it all there!

  7. Pack a “mini office” i.e. business cards, diary, notebook, itineraries and travel documents, all together.

  8. Pack toiletries, make up, top and a change of underwear, in case you are traveling long distances.

  9. pack theme items together e.g. T.shirts, Jeans, Toppers, evening, accessories, in their own Travel Zip-Lock bags.

  10. Make sure that you can easily porte your “Porte”. We have a family saying that says, “If you didn’t wear it/ use it, it can’t come home!”

All packed and ready to go 2 days prior to traveling, alleviating any last minute dramas on the day of flight. I am traveling “light”, leaving room to bring back some great travel purchases!!

Remember that traveling well is no different to hosting a Dinner Party. The earlier you start planning, the easier the function. “Set the table first” and the rest will fall into place. Start your planning and packing a week before your departure. Avoid doing this the night before or the morning of travel, as the likelihood of taking the wrong thing at the very least, or forgetting something important at worst, increases.

‘Til next time, when I check in to report on my journey, and more trips on how to travel in Style!!!

Going on a trip, the first thing that I would check would be my clothes. I make sure to prepare enough depending on the days I'd spend for my travel. Yes, it's really messy when it comes to preparation

I hate packing up. But, I enjoy reading your post. The packing rules is really helpful. When I go for a travel, I make sure to create checklist first before packing up to make sure that I will not forget to bring the most important things.
