It's the Dash that Counts

PDF Print E-mail

dashthatcountsI have to admit to a macabre fascination with tombstones and graveyards. It may be that Scorpio blood running through my veins or it may simply be a fascination with what ordinary men and women have done before me. Each gravestone represents a life that has been lived. Something wonderful, tragic or heroic may have been part of the lives of these men and women whose gravestone reads: Here lies John Doe, Beloved son of Mark and Margaret Doe & Dearest husband of Mary Doe 1898 -1935.

My question is always - what happened in the dash between the years?

The dash in real terms is so short it is barely a blink of the eye. How did they use their time on earth? While we may have men and women who have stood out from the crowd and been awarded for their efforts for humanity there are many millions more who have done so without recognition quietly going about their business and making the world a better place for those they love.

And on reflection I then ask - how am I using my time on earth? Am I filling it up with experiences that enrich my life and those of others around me? Am I making a difference? Or am I ‘on hold’ waiting for the time when my life will be perfect enough to have whatever it is that I think I will get for getting myself to ‘perfection’? Or am I simply playing at being a martyr while I wait on the whim of others to decide how I live my life?

When we are in our youth time seems to be endless, as we wait for the important events in our lives. I remember writing to a friend of mine who was in his thirties when I passed my 21st birthday. I was complaining that I didn’t feel any different than I did the day before – what was all the fuss about being twenty one?  His sage comment was ‘I understand but from now on the time will simply fly by and you will (before not too long) be wondering where it has all gone!’

We need to fill our dash with the life we have come to live -our own truly unique life. Only by doing this can we come to the end of our dash and feel that our life has been worth the effort on our part.

If we fill our lives with the experiences that we came to have,
if we accept all that life has offered us, the good, the wonderful
and the moments of grief, pain and despair
we will have had the richest of lives.

If in our time we have been as pleasured by our relationships as we have been by the use of our talents and are ability to accumulate wealth we will have had a varied and real life that will have impacted on others. If we have tried in our small way to make the burdens of another less while still honouring our own life, not giving our life up for another’s whim we will be able to leave this world in peace.

If we take each experience we have had and can accept its existence in our lives, understand the reason for it and still feel gratitude we will have lived a life that brings wisdom and richness beyond the world in which we live. In this state our impact on others can be profound.

We have much we can fill our dash with. I hope that your experiences fill your dash with joy and happiness - more than you can imagine.

Until next time

May you always travel with the blessings of Peace.
