31 May, ’11 - From Sydney to Paia (Maui's north shore):

Our annual pilgrimage to Maui, Hawaii started off in a rather uninspiring fashion....

IMG_5888Starting with 10 hours of no sleep from Sydney to Honolulu - thanks to the Jetstar Premium Economy seat with the blow-up pillow, a leg rest that wouldn't rise, and Larrikin Larrie from Gosford behind me spending the first three hours of the flight entertaining Japanese Jane from the Gold Coast across the aisle - my eyes were hanging out of my head and hay fever was in overdrive by the time we hit Honolulu Airport. Following that, the turbulent half hour inter-island flight, and rough landing, into Maui's Kahului Airport had me ready to contribute to the airline's Hawaiian theme with a technicolour yawn.

However, the colour came back to my face and the tension melted away when we stepped out of the airport and felt Maui's familiar trade winds, warm and welcoming. "Aloha. Welcome to Maui.", they seemed to whisper.

Peter and I have been coming to Hawaii, and specifically Maui, every year for the past 5 years. No, we're not old farts that are adverse to change. Please, give us a little credit! We do aim every year to visit a place that we haven't been to before - last year, it was Mexico and New Mexico - next year, perhaps a country in South America. But for every new place in the world that we explore, we seem to return to Hawaii again and again.

Making a bee line for Hertz to pick up our rental car, we ducked into a nearby KMart for some water and a few essentials before heading out for the north shore and the town of Paia. Normally basing ourselves around the hotel bordered area of Ka'anapali and Lahaina, we thought it time to explore the "real" Hawaii and head north to Paia.

Watch this space for more on Maui's north shore....
