5 May, 2011 - The Sum Of All Our Choices
It's been nearly a month since I sent my last Newsletter out, a rarity for me as. But my focus has been inward rather than out of late. I've been busy completing my "Travel Bible For Women", every woman's guide to travel and culturally correct behaviour around the world.
However, I had to come out of my cave in order to acknowledge the two events that occurred in less than a week of each other, in opposite sides of the world, both of which will change the course of history.
On the 29 April, 2011, Prince William and Kate Middleton - now the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge - married in Westminster Abbey. 2,000 friends, family and dignitaries inside the Abbey, and an estimated 2 billion people around the world, basked in the glow of two people in love, a prince and a commoner, as the monarchy bridged the gap with its people in the most joyful and glorious way.
Barely 3 days later, another event stopped the world. Al - Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden was killed by US troops on Sunday. As U.S. authorities aim to capture the last major figure involved in the 9/11 attacks who remains free, the world questions if the death of Bin Laden will just create another vacuum for other manifestations of injustice and insanity to fill.
As I am not interested in getting into an ideological debate on the monarchy and/or appropriate forms of justice, I will leave you with a quote from Albert Camus, the great French Algerian author, journalist, and key philosopher of the 20th-century, that sums it up succinctly:
"Life is a sum of all your choices."
I know which legacy I'd rather leave behind.
Safe Travels,
Victoria x
