29 July, 2010 - Reconnecting With My Tribe

I'm sitting here in glorious Boracay Island (Philippines) with a sore throat and a shocking head cold which has managed to work its way to my chest. My continuous coughing has kept me, and Peter, awake from the early hours of this morning.

IMG_3059Please don't feel sorry for me, though. I assure you that my sorry state has been self inflicted. We have been laughing, talking non-stop, eating like there is no tomorrow, drinking far more than was good for us, and partying over 9 days straight.

The occasion ? My family reunion in the Philippines. Every 5 years, for the past 25 years, my paternal family, the Aboitiz-Moraza clan, converge from the four corners of the world into Cebu, Philippines. This year, our numbers reached 407.

Over the past 9 days, I have been busy reconnecting with my "tribe".

The concept of "tribe" has always been of paramount importance to our clan, and while I recuperated in the warm waters and sandy shores of Boracay Island, I felt compelled to explore this topic.

The term "tribe" can trace its origins in the early formation of the Roman Empire. It now means "a group of persons forming a community and claiming descent from a common ancestor". In a nutshell, its about ones inner connection to its source, giving one a profound sense of belonging.

I have often wondered over these past few days what it is about "tribe" that provides us, as human beings, with so much comfort, now seemingly more than ever.

Is it our way of addressing the threats that face us and closing ranks against the disconnection of the present world?

Does belonging to a tribe make us feel safer and more secure?

Is it because we sense a lack of connectedness in the present world that we crave our "tribe" more than ever?

I'm sure that you all have your own personal experiences on the concept of tribe, so please share them with us.

Your comments will be posted on this Blog.

Gorgeous Victoria

In the world of business I believe being part of a tribe is incredibly important and particularly so for women. We have much to do to become the best expression of who we can be, we have much to do to increase the output and sustainability of women owned business and the support, inspiration, sharing of ideas we receive within the tribe is integral in the process.

Dear Victoria,
You are so right, we all need to be a part of a tribe in some form. This can be family, friends, work colleagues or even simply those we share an experience with. Our western society has resulted in a form of disconnectednes s from our 'tribe' as we live our lives apart, yet there seems to be a great cry from people wanting to connect with community. Perhaps as we become more aware of this need within us, and we slow down the frantic pace of life, we will find it again.

I also love your article on 'On Food and Family' , which I am sure most of us can relate to. Very well written.
Kindest regards, Marika

Thank you for your comments, Suzy and Marika!

Re-connecting back to our tribe or "source", whether it be in the form of family and friends, business, or all-women travel adventures (Marika!), the concept of "tribe" seems to fulfill a primal need in us all. As modern day society becomes increasingly disconnected, we need to stay vigilant and make sure we provide this for ourselves on a regular basis as it is a major source of comfort and support for us.

Hi Victoria,

My immediate tribe (descendants of my great grandfather) have been having reunions every year that I can remember but last my extended tribe had a 125yr reunion of their immigrating to Australia and it was quite a celebration, albeit as a simple picnic in the church grounds of a country church in Queensland where my Great great grandmother is buried. The youngest member of my family (2yrs old) was given the honour of unveiling a plaque which has been attached to the gravestone to commemorate the event. There were literally hundreds of people there, most whom I had never met and it was an interesting situation to realise we had all come from the same gene pool!

I think it takes a few years before the importance of family and your roots are truly understood and appreciated.
I look forward to seeing you back at Athena one day. Enjoy the world!

Kind Regards

Susan Kath
