Last Friday I had the pleasure of attending the Ascend Development Day organized by Jen Dalitz of Sphinxx at Westpac Headquarters, Sydney. One of the topics of discussion on the day was the value of Networking. This topic happens to be a subject that is close to my heart.

Although Google loves the word "networking" for ranking, I personally prefer to use the word "connecting". One thing that I did agree with the speaker on, though, was that networking/ connecting is a life skill, and not just something that we do when we want something.

Thinking about the concept of "networking" sparked off a flurry of activity in Facebook after Ludwina Dautovic (of "The Red Tent Woman" fame) posted a topic for discussion on what we liked and disliked about networking, proving that Facebook itself was a valuable and cost effective way for women in business to network!

We all agreed that we liked the idea of giving without expectation, we liked the idea of heart-to-heart connections, and that "networking" should be all about building a relationship and being generous with our information. 

What we didn't like was the high cost of many events, little content value, unwelcoming atmosphere, and people that swooped on other people like vultures at events so that they could sell their products or services.
